Utilities

The basic utility services are provided with the combined contribution of Vaadhoo Council, FENAKA Corporation Limited and the Community. The electric infrastructure, premises, Machineries and equipments were put together in the island with 100% contribution of the community. The power house (previously known as the Vaadhoo Power House) provided electricity in the island in deficit budget over years. However, to meet the increasing demand, it became a great challenge to run the service efficiently without any government contribution. Hence to conquer these challenges, the community decided to convert all the rights of the company into the government utility company, the Northern Utilities Company in 2011. Since then service has been provided with hundred percent control of the government. The sewage system is a very simple system managed by individual community groups. By joining together a group of households, the pipeline is set direct into the sea. Even though the system flushes out a large amount of freshwater into the sea, it has no direct impact yet to the current freshwater lens. However this is not a sustainable method and is only sufficient to the current level of population. The public drinking water facilities are managed by the Council of Vaadhoo. The water is stored in several storage facilities placed on different parts of the island, and are refilled with rain water during rainy season. Current storage capacity is 40,000 letters and is sufficient for continuous 3 moths supply of water for the whole population. In addition more than 65% of households have own septic tanks at there home.
